I absolutely LOVE 'The Famous five - 5 go to smugglers top'. It gives me such wonderful memories of when I used to have sleepovers with my best friend, and we would listen to 'The famous five' books on audio. I have particularly fond memories of listening to this one in the dark whilst eating a midnight feast and loving the feeling of being scared but needing to continue listening so that I could complete the adventure with the famous five. I love how Enid Blyton almost makes you feel as though you're an extra member of the gang whilst you read the books. I particularly liked George's character too, I felt that I could relate to her growing up, as I was a fairly headstrong girl myself! It's important to have characters in books that you can relate to.

As a child, I read (and re-read!) a collection of Jacqueline Wilson novels, specifically 'The Lottie Project'. I enjoyed stories by this author as I found them really relatable as a child. The character would outline their own life and the people or hurdles within it, but would then get lost in a completely new story within the story which is exactly how I felt when reading these books! Often told in a first-person account, it made me feel as though I became the character. I've since passed these books onto my daughter who has read them all and will keep them for future grandchildren as I feel the stories and topics covered are timeless and will always remind me of my own childhood.
Autumn 2
Welcome back after the half-term holidays! Autumn 2 is always one of our favourite half terms, with the build up to Christmas and nativities. Here is a sneak peak of our learning this half term.
In History we will be focusing on why we have Remembrance day. We will think about what it was like on the front line, how animals helped during the war and about the role that women played in the first world war. We will be looking at an important individual; Walter Tull.
In science, we will be working scientifically and observing changes over time, specifically looking at the seasons. The children will then collect data and use this information to support them in answering questions based on season change. Upon completion of this, children will then begin to create mini enquiries and we will perform an experiment involving rocket mice!
In Design Technology, we will be thinking about the purpose of different materials. The children will then design, make and evaluate their own hand puppets using a running stitch.
Phonics and spelling will be taught daily alongside our English lessons. This half term we will be writing for a purpose to inform, we will be looking at information about Remembrance Day and then write some informative sentences about this event. We will then be using the story of ‘Troll Swap’ (written by Leigh Hodgkinson) as our next writing stimulus. We will be thinking about using expanded noun phrases in character description, and using this in our final outcome of a story in which two contrasting characters swap roles. In our final week, we will focus on writing to inform, and we will write a letter to Father Christmas, informing him of the presents that we would like to receive on Christmas day.
In maths, we continue to follow the White Rose scheme of work. Our focus in Year 2 will be adding and subtracting 1 and 2 digit numbers crossing 10s and adding and subtracting two 2 digit numbers not crossing the tens barrier and finally linking our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to create and explore number bonds to 100. After this we will explore Money, adding and subtracting different amounts and comparing different amounts and values. We will then end 2023 exploring equal groups and arrays!
Don’t forget if you want to get a head start or further support your child at home, all of our in-school methods can found in our maths policy on the ‘maths at Bishop Bronescombe’ tab above.
In P.E, we will be learning to express different movements through dance; specifically linking this to The Gun Powder Plot. We will use these intricate movements to form a dance piece, which the children will evaluate and critique.
In R.E. we will exploring the question: ‘What is the good news that Jesus brings?’. We will be thinking about how Christians believe that Jesus provides friendship, peace and forgiveness.
In Music, we will be learning our nativity songs and will be singing as part of an ensemble, thinking about what makes a good performance. We are very much looking forward to our nativity!
In computing, we will be completing a ‘2question/2investigate’ unit in which we will use and create pictograms and create and search binary trees.
In Art we will be exploring different techniques to create fireworks using paint. Children will use different tools to experiment and will then use their favourite techniques in their final piece to create a firework painting.
Our focus for PSHE will be ‘Celebrating differences’; we will be exploring the terms ‘stereotypes’ and ‘diversity’. The outcome of this unit will be to understand that our differences are what make us unique and to celebrate diversity.
