Little Fish - Year 2

Mrs Horwell

Teacher/ Acting Assistant Head

I absolutely LOVE 'The Famous five - 5 go to smugglers top'. It gives me such wonderful memories of when I used to have sleepovers with my best friend, and we would listen to 'The famous five' books on audio. I have particularly fond memories of listening to this one in the dark whilst eating a midnight feast and loving the feeling of being scared but needing to continue listening so that I could complete the adventure with the famous five. I love how Enid Blyton almost makes you feel as though you're an extra member of the gang whilst you read the books. I particularly liked George's character too, I felt that I could relate to her growing up, as I was a fairly headstrong girl myself! It's important to have characters in books that you can relate to.

As a child, I read (and re-read!) a collection of Jacqueline Wilson novels, specifically 'The Lottie Project'. I enjoyed stories by this author as I found them really relatable as a child. The character would outline their own life and the people or hurdles within it, but would then get lost in a completely new story within the story which is exactly how I felt when reading these books! Often told in a first-person account, it made me feel as though I became the character. I've since passed these books onto my daughter who has read them all and will keep them for future grandchildren as I feel the stories and topics covered are timeless and will always remind me of my own childhood.

Summer 2

Welcome back! We hope you have had a lovely May break. The title for Summer 2 is ‘Under the Sea’.

In Science, we will be looking at living things and their habitats. We will be learning about different species of animals and plants, where they live and why. We will also be focussing on food chains and what animals eat. The children will be using the vocabulary; herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.

In Art we will be looking at the work of Suzie Marsh and using her techniques to create our own sculptures. Then we will be learning about mixed media and abstract art, where the children will be creating their own ‘sea themed’ art using mixed media.

Phonics and spelling will continue to be taught daily alongside our English lessons. In English, we will be looking at the text ‘Grandad’s secret giant’ by David Litchfield. During the unit, we will be focusing on using the past and present tense correctly, using subordination and co-ordination to join sentences, using expanded nouns phrases to describe and using suffixes such as -ment and -ful. At the end of the unit, we will be writing our own version of the story with a focus on morals and acceptance of others.

In maths, we will follow the White Rose scheme of work. Our focus in Year 2 will be finishing fractions and then starting statistics and position and direction. We will be continually reviewing our arithmetic methods throughout the half term through our ‘fluency in five’ sessions.

In R.E. we will be exploring the question: ‘What makes some people and places in Cornwall sacred?’ We will focus on the celebrations of St Piran’s Day, other Cornish Saints and places in Cornwall that are sacred.

In music we will be completing the ‘Let’s perform together’ in which we will listen to, and appraise different pieces of music, find the pulse to pieces of music, learn about pitch, tempo and rhythm. Children will also play notes on the glockenspiel and learn how to compose pieces of music, we will then perform the songs that we have learned.

In P.E, we will be focusing on attacking and defending; we will think about how to use space within a game, how to effectively mark another player, how to defend the space between two players, how to pass the ball to another player and get it past a defender. We will then use all of these skills within a game.

In computing, we will be completing a Purple Mash unit called ‘Animated Story Books’ in which we will use ‘2create a story’ to plan, draw and write our own story eBooks.

In PSHE, we will be completing the ‘changing me’ unit in which children will think about the life cycle of a human, how their life has changed so far and what things have stayed the same. They will look at how their body has changed since they were babies and the differences in the anatomy of boys’ and girls’ bodies.

We hope you find the resources below easy to access for supporting your child's learning at home and understanding the key objectives being covered. The list below includes:
