Little Fish - Year 1

Mrs Horwell

Teacher/ KS1 Lead

I absolutely LOVE 'The Famous five - 5 go to smugglers top'. It gives me such wonderful memories of when I used to have sleepovers with my best friend, and we would listen to 'The famous five' books on audio. I have particularly fond memories of listening to this one in the dark whilst eating a midnight feast and loving the feeling of being scared but needing to continue listening so that I could complete the adventure with the famous five. I love how Enid Blyton almost makes you feel as though you're an extra member of the gang whilst you read the books. I particularly liked George's character too

Autumn 2

Welcome back after the half-term holidays! Autumn 2 is always one of our favourite half terms, with the build up to Christmas and nativities. Here is a sneak peak of our learning this half term.

In History, we will explore the lives of significant individuals from the past who have made national and international achievements more specifically Nurses; Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Edith Cavell. Our outcome for this unit will be for the children to be able to answer the question of what achievements these nurses made.

In science, we will be working scientifically and observing changes over time, specifically looking at the seasons. The children will then collect data and use this information to support them in answering questions based on season change.  Upon completion of this, children will then begin to create mini enquiries; year 1 will perform an experiment involving floating and sinking and the year 2s will perform an experiment involving rocket mice!

In DT, we will be discovering clothing from around the world and the different materials and processes that are used.  The children will then design, create and evaluate their own no-sew scarf.

Phonics and spelling will be taught daily alongside our English lessons. This half term we will be writing for a purpose to entertain, we will be exploring fireworks poetry. We will then be using the story of Nibbles: The book monster as our stimulus and we will retell the story and will write a diary in the role of Nibbles. In our final week, we will focus on writing to inform, and we will write a letter to Father Christmas, informing him of the presents that we would like to receive on Christmas day.

In maths, we continue to follow the White Rose scheme of work. Our focus in year one will be addition and subtraction within 10, exploring part whole models, number bonds, fact families and comparing calculations. After this we will explore different 2D and 3D shapes and how to identify and classify them based on their unique properties. Finally, we will continue to build on previous knowledge of place value however we will extend the learning to numbers within 20. We will ensure that we are retaining and consolidating methods taught through our ‘fluency in five’ sessions at the start of our maths lessons.

Don’t forget if you want to get a head start or further support your child at home, all of our in-school methods can found in our maths policy on the ‘maths at Bishop Bronescombe’ tab above.

In P.E, we will be learning to express different movements through dance; specifically linking this to animals around the world. We will use these intricate movements to form a dance piece, which the children will evaluate and critique.

In R.E. we will exploring the question: “Why does Christmas matter to Christians?” to do this we will try to understand why Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God.  We will explore the story of Jesus’s birth and why we are thankful for the birth of Jesus.  Identify that Jesus’s birth is the reason that Christians celebrate Christmas and finally discover and that Christians believe that ‘giving’ is important and the impact this has had on the traditions of Christmas.

In Music, we will be learning our nativity songs and will be singing as part of an ensemble, thinking about what makes a good performance. We are very much looking forward to our nativity!
